What is Sixth Sense Technology?

As humans, we interact with the world with our five senses. Through our five senses, we encounter and perceive our environments and our situations. Although these five senses allow us to interact with our world, we have not been able to use the knowledge that we have accumulated over time and used it to interact with the physical world. Until this point, our computing devices have not been able to successfully integrate technology with our ability to the physical world. Information is confined to text through paper and digital worlds, but Sixth Sense technology offers the ability to “bridge” the gap between the digital and physical worlds in a mobile, wearable way. The mobility of the Sixth Sense Technology allows digital information to be used in compliance with our interactions with the world. Through the combination of a camera, projector, mirror, and color markers, we now have the capability to seamlessly draw information and interact with such information with hand gestures.

Sixth Sense Technology or WUW (Wear Ur World) was invented by Pranav Mistry. The device sees what we see and displays information that we wish to view. It can be viewed on multiple surfaces, projecting onto a surface and allowing for physical interaction. The Sixth Sense Technology has the capacity to offer various applications ranging from telecommunication capabilities to the ability to display the time.

Hardware and Application of Sixth Sense Technology

Hardware
Camera – Webcam captures and recognizes objects as well as tracking hand gestures of users, sends              data to smart phone.

Projector – Projects visual information which consequently enables various surfaces such as walls and other physical objects—transforms our setting into usable interfaces.

Mirror – Reflects the projector.

Smartphone – Runs Sixth Sense software, and connects to the Internet. Source of digital information.

Colored Markers – Four (red, yellow, green and blue) pieces of tape that allow webcam to recognize gestures and movements in order to interpret interaction with interfaces.

Applications
  • Phone Calls

  • Call up maps

  • Check the time

  • Multimedia reading

  • Drawing applications

  • Zooming abilities

  • Retrieval of product information

  • Retrieval of book information

  • Real time flight updates

  • Feed information on people

  • Take pictures

Advantages, Future Use and Implication of Sixth Sense Technology

The Sixth Sense’s integration of the physical world with the digital essentially renders the entire world as your computer. The technology does not change human habits, instead it makes computers and other technologies change to accommodate human requirements. It is a cost effective device, with the combination of hardware equating to $350.00. The mobility of the device is largely due to the portable and smaller sized pieces. Furthermore, the mobility of the device is evidenced in its lack of a mouse or keyboard as well as the elimination of carrying a camera. Sixth Sense Technology transforms the world into an accessible database as well as being portable and efficient.

The color markers on the fingers are the next step in the innovation of this technology. The elimination of unnecessary components would prove to make the device more portable. At the moment, the device is contained on a pendant that holds the three components of the technology. Perhaps the integration of the required devices will be seen and contained within one piece rather than three separate articles.

Although this technology has yet to become a widely incorporated device, it offers massive potential. The idea of having the entire world connected to the digital seems surreal as we combine nature with technology seamlessly. Sixth Sense Technology would see a decrease in paper, ability to use any surface for activities (elimination of screens) and improve the lives of handicapped people. On the other hand, some of the possible issues that arise include the availability to inappropriate information, future cost, connection issues with areas that do not host a capable network and overreliance on technology. If the technology was to be adopted by a wide population, it would be necessary to have Internet access at all times into areas which do not. Furthermore, we could possibly see an age in which we are too wired and over-reliant on technology in such a manner that it heavily influences our daily life.
